Dirithromycin, is the generic name and is also sold under other brand names. These drugs belong to the family of drugs known as Macrolide antibiotic.

It is prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by streptococcus, staphylococcus and other bacteria against which penicillin or tetracycline antibiotics cannot be used..

No drinking not even moderate alcohol consumption is advised while taking this drug.

At this time the medical community defines moderate consumption of alcohol as no more than two drinks per day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Anything more than that, is considered an unhealthy dependency on alcohol that may have adverse social, family and health consequences.

If a person drinks only once or twice a week but drinks on the same days each week and more than two drinks this is considered as an alcohol dependency.

If a person binge drinks at any time during the week this is also considered as alcoholism.

Some consider alcoholism as a disease while others consider it an addiction which is the result of personal choice and character fault. This school of thought blames the alcoholism on life style choices.

Personally I consider alcoholism a genetic tendency as I have seen families of alcoholics even when they live far apart. These unfortunate people are probably dependent on alcohol from the first drink.

When alcohol interacts with prescription over the counter drugs it usually results in negative health effects most especially liver damage as the main organ affected.

Before starting advise your physician of any allergies, if you have untreated or uncontrolled epilepsy, a bone marrow disorder, paralytic ileus, intestinal blockage, clozapine infection or immune suppression medication, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, high blood pressure, history of heart attack or stroke, epilepsy, seizure, lung disease, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, bone marrow disorder, blood cell disorder, enlarged prostate, urinary problems, glaucoma or a history of smoking.

Considerations

Do not use if pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Do not use if allergic to the drug.

Do not use for serious blood infections.

Common Side Effects

Abdominal pain, headache, nausea and diarrhea.

Less Common Side Effects

Increased blood platelet count, vomiting, upset stomach, increased blood potassium, dizzy, faint, pain, weakness, stomach disorders, increasing cough, stomach gas, rash, breathing difficulties, itching and sleeplessness. Some blood tests can also be affected.

Rare Side Effects

Abnormal stools, allergic reaction, dim vision, appetite loss, anxiety, constipation, dehydration, depression, dry mouth, painful menstruation, flushing, swelling of hands or feet, nosebleeds, eye disorders, fever, flu symptoms, stomach and intestinal irritation, vomiting blood, rapid breathing, unwell, mouth sores, muscle aches, neck pain, nervousness, heart palpitations, tingling in hands or feet, tired, sweating, change in sense of taste, thirst, ringing or buzzing in ears, tremors, frequent urination, vaginal fungus infections and vaginal irritation.
