Copaxone, generic name Glatiramer, is also sold under other brand names. These drugs belong to the family of drugs known as Anti multiple sclerosis agent.

It is prescribed treatment of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).

Moderate alcohol consumption is advised while taking this drug.

At this time the medical community defines moderate consumption of alcohol as no more than two drinks per day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Anything more than that, is considered an unhealthy dependency on alcohol that may have adverse social, family and health consequences.

If a person drinks only once or twice a week but drinks on the same days each week and more than two drinks this is considered as an alcohol dependency.

If a person binge drinks at any time during the week this is also considered as alcoholism.

Some consider alcoholism as a disease while others consider it an addiction which is the result of personal choice and character fault. This school of thought blames the alcoholism on life style choices.

Personally I consider alcoholism a genetic tendency as I have seen families of alcoholics even when they live far apart. These unfortunate people are probably dependent on alcohol from the first drink.

When alcohol interacts with prescription over the counter drugs it usually results in negative health effects most especially liver damage as the main organ affected.

Before starting advise your physician of any allergies, if you have untreated or uncontrolled epilepsy, a bone marrow disorder, paralytic ileus, intestinal blockage, clozapine infection or immune suppression medication, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, high blood pressure, history of heart attack or stroke, epilepsy, seizure, lung disease, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, bone marrow disorder, blood cell disorder, enlarged prostate, urinary problems, glaucoma or a history of smoking.

Considerations

Do not use if allergic to the drug.

Do not take if pregnant or planning to become so.

About 10% of people have reactions such as flushing, chest pain, heart palpitations, anxiety, breathing difficulties and closing of the throat and itching.

Most Common Side Effects

Infections, weakness, pain, chest pain, flu symptoms, back pain, flushing, heart palpitations, anxiety, muscle stiffness or spasticity, frequent urination, swollen lymph glands, injection site reactions such as pain, inflammation, itching, mass at site, welts, skin marks, bleeding as well as breathing difficulties, runny nose and joint pain.

Common Side Effects

Fever, neck pain, facial swelling, bacterial infection, migraines, fever, rapid heartbeat, tremors, fainting, appetite loss, vomiting, stomach disorders, vaginal infection, painful menstruation, black and blue marks, swelling in arms or legs, bronchial irritation, spasm of the larynx and ear pain.

Less Common Side Effects

Chills, cysts, agitation, foot drop, nervousness, rolling eyeballs, confusion, speech problems, cold sores, redness, itching, rash, skin nodule, stomach pain, weight gain and eye disorders.
