The grape is grown world wide mostly in cooler climates throughout the world but is mostly recognized as the most recognized wine from the Burgundy region of France.
It recognized as one of the finer wines of the world but the grape is known to be difficult to cultivate and produce wine from.
The wine is also produced in Austria, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, the Republic of Georgia, Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, New Zealand, South Africa, Serbia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The wine is also produced in the United States with the best coming from Oregon and California.
The leaves of Pinot noir are generally smaller than those of Cabernet Sauvignon, but larger than those of Syrah. The grape cluster is small and cylindrical, vaguely shaped like a pine cone.
It is often difficult to recognize Pinot Noir at wine tastings because it produces a wine with a wide range of smells and flavours. The wine usually has a light to medium body with aromas unlike cherry, raspberry or currant.
The grape is also used to make Champagne and other sparkling wines. When occasionally used for white wines the grape tends to be of a low yield.
In addition to being used for the production of sparkling and still red wine, Pinot noir is also sometimes used for rosé still wines, and even vin gris white wines.
