Zemplar generic name paricalcitol is given to a man made form of vitamin D which is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach and for the functioning of calcium in the body.
It is used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism which is overactivity of the parathyroid gland in people with chronic kidney failure and works by blocking the formation and release of parathyroid hormone.
It is suggested moderate drinking only while using this drug as the drug’s effectiveness may be decreased and the side effects may be increased.
At this time the medical community defines moderate consumption of alcohol as no more than two drinks per day and no more than 14 drinks per week. If anything more than that it is considered an unhealthy dependency on alcohol that may have adverse social, family and health consequences.
If a person drinks only once or twice a week but drinks on the same days each week and more than two drinks this is considered as an alcohol dependency.
If a person binge drinks at any time during the week this is also considered as alcoholism.

Less serious side effects are dizzy, spinning sensation, back pain, muscle or joint pain, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, sore throat, cough runny or stuffy nose, mild itching or skin rash. If these occur call your physician for advice.
Serious side effects are severe allergic reactions such as hives difficult breathing, tight chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, chest pain, short of breath, feeling faint, swelling, rapid weight gain, pain or burning when urinating, dry mouth, drowsy, increased urine output, fast heart rate, lightheaded, faint, seizures, nausea, loss of appetite, increased thirst, muscle weakness, confusion, tired or restless, early signs of vitamin D overdose such as weakness, metallic taste in mouth, weight loss, muscle or bone pain, constipation, nausea and vomiting.If these occur get emergency medical help.
