Nitisinone Alcohol

Nitisinone is a drug used for the treatment of inherited genetic condition known as tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1) which is a metabolic disorder that occurs when when there is not enough production of the enzyme that breaks down proteins in certain foods. This condition occurs mostly in infants.

The HT-1 symptoms include unusual bleeding or symptoms of liver failure such as dark urine, jaundice, sudden stomach pain, nausea, vomiting diarrhea and fatigue.

This drug works by preventing the body from destroying the amino acid tyrosine and other toxic substances that accumulate and cause damage to the liver or kidneys.

Since this is a disease affecting infants, there is no consideration of the drinking of alcohol.

When using this drug it is only a part of a comprehensive treatment program that includes a special diet created for the child by a doctor or nutrition counsellor.

Before using Orfadin advise your physician if you are allergic to this or any other drug or substance, are pregnant, plan to be so, are breastfeeding, using any other drug, if you have eye pain, redness or swelling or if your eyes are more sensitive to light.

Side Effects

Less serious side effects are fever, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, itching or peeling skin, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, nervous, trouble sleeping, thirst or mild stomach pain. If these occur call your physician for advice.

Serious side effects are severe allergic reactions such as hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, severe jaundice, eye redness, pain, burning, sensitive to light, change in vision, black, tarry or bloody stools, unusual bruising or bleeding.If these occur get emergency medical help.
