Acamprosate calcium helps in the treatment of alcohol dependence by helping restore a chemical imbalance in the brain that is caused by long term drinking. This drug is to be taken after the person has already quit drinking as it reduces the physical distress and emotional discomfort due to the cessation of alcohol consumption.
Obviously alcohol should not be consumed not even moderate drinking as the point of the drug is to help reduce the craving for alcohol. There may be serious side effects.
At this time the medical community defines moderate consumption of alcohol as no more than two drinks per day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Anything more than that is considered an unhealthy dependency on alcohol that may have adverse social, family and health consequences.
If a person drinks only once or twice a week but drinks on the same days each week and more than two drinks this is considered as an alcohol dependency.

Personally I consider alcoholism a genetic tendency as I have seen families of alcoholics even when they live far apart. These unfortunate people are probably dependent on alcohol from the first drink.
When alcohol interacts with prescription over the counter drugs it usually results in negative health effects most especially liver damage as the main organ affected.
This drug is usually prescribed for a period of 12 months after stopping drinking and it is not addictive.
The drug does not work if you are still drinking when you start to use the drug.
It should not be taken if you have depression, kidney disease, suicidal thoughts, allergies to sulfites or other medicines, allergies to foods, dyes or preservatives, pregnant or trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Side Effects
Less serious side effects are diarrhea, dizziness, gas, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, itching, joint or muscle pain, loss of appetite, nausea or sweating. If these occur call your physician for advice.
Serious side effects are anxiety or nervousness, burning, tingling in your arms, legs, hands or feet, depression, chest pains, less urination or suicidal thoughts. If these occur get emergency medical help.
